Littmann ® stethoscopes are used as a diagnostic tool during a physical, cardiology assessment of a patient; they are professional choice for auscultation, due to their outstanding acoustic ability, latex-free, long life tubing and comfort touch ear tips.
French Physician René Laennec invented the first stethoscope in 1816, by using a long, rolled paper tube, held to a patient’s chest to funnel the sound of their heartbeat. The name stethoscope originates from two Greek words: stethos (chest) and skopein (to view or see). 25 years later, New Yorker, George P Camman developed the first stethoscope with ear pieces.
Early 1960s, Harvard Medical School Professor, David Littmann patented a revolutionary new stethoscope with advanced improvements on acoustic performance. Littmann transformed the stethoscope into a powerful diagnostic piece of equipment used by medical professionals around the world today.
21st century innovations have seen stethoscopes develop far beyond Laennec and Littmann’s original inventions, with today’s designs including a range of innovative features, such as: tuneable diaphragms, ambient noise reduction and Bluetooth connectivity. The 21st century stethoscope allows physicians to quickly assess, diagnose, and monitor their patients, achieving exceptional performance and precise, reliable results.
